Meet Maya

She has two children both born at home in Aug 2014 and March 2018. She loves African dancing, gardening with her family, hiking in the woods and soaking in hot water. She survives the grey winters by regularly having fresh homemade chai, cooking on the stove, and playing at the beach with her kids, regardless of the weather. After spending her childhood and early young adult years pursuing musical theater and jazz singing both academically and professionally, she realized it wasn’t what she wanted for a career. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what happened between leaving this path and finding midwifery but she experienced an “ah ha” moment that led her to enrolling in midwifery school before the year was out. After 3 apprenticeships on the Olympic Peninsula and a birth center in Ubud, Bali and working closely with 4 midwives as well as completing her didactic work at Aviva College, she received her WA state license in 2014. Maya is particularly passionate about helping families take time during the prenatal period to prepare for the postpartum experience through prompting discussions and careful planning. “With how much emphasis there is on making a ‘birth plan’ from the ‘natural birth movement’, I feel strongly that families should be spending equal amount of time and effort making a postpartum support plan.”
