Meet Maya (She/Her)

I love African dancing, gardening with my family, swimming in the Salish Sea all year round, roller skating with my kiddos, hiking in the woods and soaking in hot water. I survive the grey winters with fresh chai cooking on the stove and playing at the beach even in the rain. I have two children both born at home. After spending my childhood and early young adult years pursuing musical theater and jazz singing both academically and professionally, I realized I needed a change. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what happened between leaving this path and finding midwifery but I experienced an “ah ha” moment that led me to enrolling in midwifery school in 2007. After 3 apprenticeships on the Olympic Peninsula and a busy birth center in Bali, as well as completing my didactic work at Aviva College, I became an LM in 2014. I am particularly passionate about helping families prepare for the postpartum experience through prompting discussions and careful planning. I really love the education and empowerment piece of midwifery. I had the pleasure and joy to learn from and work along side Peninsula Midwives founder Kathy Luch since 2012 before her retirement in Jan 2022. Carrying on this practice that has been fostered for so many years is such an honor. Being a part of Peninsula Midwives is a version of home to me and I’m so incredibly thrilled and honored to be carrying on the Peninsula Midwives torch upon Kathy’s “graduation”.

I have deeply loved attending births together with this woman as a team, as peers, as midwives and as friends. Thank you Kathy for all the chocolate, wine, laughter, tears and wisdom shared over these years.

Peninsula Midwives is the best! They kept me from having to go to the hospital by giving me the confidence and the skills needed to properly guide my baby into the world; they also literally saved my life immediately after the birth when some complications arose, then stayed with us until 3 in the morning just to be sure mother and baby were safe, stable and happy. I am forever grateful.
